Beneath Those Pearl Eyes

Beneath Those Pearl Eyes

Many times -
I wondered how many memories lay beneath the lines and creases
that shaped her face into the most beautiful puzzle.

- Endless hours listening contently -
As she would describe so precisely the photo atop the mantle of the handsome man in the black coat. I, with eyes full of life always failed to see the twinkle in his eyes she so zestfully described
and sometimes wondered -
(if perhaps her imagination played tricks on her mind)

Today -
The old antique china cabinet
(the one I loved so much as a child)
with it's figurines and glass vases stood vacant.
Funny how before today I never noticed the
crack in the mirror nor that twinkle in my eye.

Remembering -
How I sat those days ...
My face between her hands as she felt the youthfulness of my skin.
Her pearl colored eyes dull yet - held such happiness

For I know now, she knew
exactly what I looked like
all along.

For there was I and he and
a twinkle ...
